Birthday Bonus: Get a free sample with your birthday order!

Birthdays really lose their fanfare as an adult, so NightBlooming would like to give you an extra treat! In 2016 we're going to try a Birthday Bonus program at NightBlooming.  It's super-simple:

1. Update your Etsy Profile to include your birthday.
Go to your Etsy profile page, and in the upper right hand corner click Edit Profile.  Enter your birthday.  Done. You're on your honor with this one.

2.  Place an order with a pre-shipping, post-discount total over $25 any time within 7 days of your birthday.
What that means is that you have to have your checkout value of $25 after any discount codes are used, but before shipping costs are added in. Assuming you follow Step 3, I'll pop over to your profile and check your birthday.

3. In the Message to Seller at checkout, tell me which one (1) of the following free samples you would like me to include with your order. Choose from:

But my birthday is already over for 2016!

That's okay! If your birthday was between January 1st, 2016 and this post, you're still in! Just place an order (following the rules above) before January 20th, 2016 and we'll make sure you get your sample, too!

That's it!  We're going to see how this works, but if people like it, we'll keep it around for 2017 and beyond.

25% off Thriae and Winter Bee Pictures

I was out taking pictures of our wonderful bees the other day and realized there's nothing better for a dry, itchy winter scalp than Thriae Scalp Scrub!  In honor of our little bees being bundled up for the winter, we're offering 25% off on Thriae until Jan 20th, or while supplies last.  This applies to all three sizes, the 1/2 ounce sample, the 2 ounce full size, and the 8 ounce big size.

Keep in mind that in winter the scrub tends to contract a bit during shipping, so you'll need to warm it up once it arrives and give it a little fluff with a spoon!

Winter Bees

As you might recall, we keep Minnesota Hygienic honey bees in top bar hives. They're amazing little creatures and a total joy to have around.  We only harvest their honey in the spring because, well, honey is what nature designed bees to eat over the winter!  The thick honey combs are also key to insulating the hive in the winter as they gather warmth at the height of the day and then slowly release it overnight to help keep the bees warm.  Come spring, when the flowers open and the nectar flow begins, the bees will ignore the stored honey in favor of fresh nectar.  Only then will we take whatever they don't use over the winter and are no longer interested in eating.

We also have insulation panels on the hives and that nice thick layer of snow on the top of the hives will add additional insulation.

A quick peek through the windows on the side shows that both the pine hive and cedar hive bees are doing great!

In the winter, honey bees clump up into a ball and rotate bees in and out of it to keep warm. (Honey bees are also the only insects that actually produce warmth.)  It's actually much the same way that penguins survive the bitter cold, by sharing time on the outer circle in the cold, then moving inward to warm up while others take their turn sheltering the inner core from the cold.

The temperatures dropped here, but tomorrow is supposed to be above freezing at the height of the day, so hopefully the bees enjoy their break!

A sacred grove or sacred woods are any grove of trees of special religious importance to a particular culture. Sacred groves feature in various cultures throughout the world. Examples of sacred groves include the Greco-Roman temenos, the Norse hörgr, and the Celtic nemeton, which was largely but not exclusively associated with Druidic practice.

Sacred Forest Custom Oil Blend: A middle-weight oil, perfect for scalp or length.

Base Oil: Sweet Almond Oil
Secondary Oils: Pumpkin Oil, Hazelnut Oil, Avocado Oil
Essential Oils: Frankincense, Myrrh, Pine, Cedarwood, Ho Wood, Hinoki, Vetiver, Sandalwood
Aroma: Sacred incense in an evergreen forest.

Application: After a shower rub 1-2 drops of oil in the hands and massage into damp hair.

Detailed Ingredients:

• Sweet Almond Oil- This pale golden oil is extracted from almond kernels. Apart from vitamin E it also contains vitamin D and other nutritious components including essential minerals such as magnesium, calcium and rich, natural fats. This oil is easily absorbed and will not clog pores, making it ideal for the scalp and face as well as hair.

• Pumpkin Seed Oil- Pumpkin seeds contain fatty oils with linoleic acid and oleic acid, both known to prevent cancer-causing cell production. They are also an excellent source of vitamins A, B6 and C. In addition, the seeds contain beneficial nutrients like zinc, magnesium, calcium and iron. Perhaps most important to those suffering from hair loss, the seeds contain cucurbitin, a unique amino that may be responsible for pumpkin seeds' effects on hair growth. There is conjecture that when consumed internally pumpkin seed oil it is a DHT blocker and can aid in treating baldness or hair loss, though no clinical study has been done.

• Hazelnut Oil- Considered valuable in giving facial and body massages. It has a high content of essential fatty acids like linoleic acid. Hazelnut oil has a very light, pleasing sweet aroma, which is also somewhat nutty. It is a highly unsaturated vegetable oil that boasts of its fine texture. Hazelnut oil provides numerous health benefits for which it is being increasingly preferred in the preparation of carrier oil blend. The best part about using this carrier oil is that, it does not leave an oily feel behind. The oil is also known to efficiently play the role of an astringent.

• Avocado Oil- This deep golden oil is an edible oil pressed from the fruit of the Persea americana (avocado). It is used for lubrication and in cosmetics where it is valued for its regenerative and moisturizing properties. Rich in nutrients, amino acids, and essential fatty acids, this nutritional oil is excellent for enhancing hair health. It supplies vitamins A, B, D, and E to nourish both hair follicles and the scalp. Vitamin E also acts as a protective antioxidant. It has natural humectant properties, adding and locking in moisture. The monounsaturated fatty acids will give hair a glossy shine and silky texture. The amino acids will promote the growth of new hair cells.

• Frankincense Essential Oil- Frankincense Oil is extracted from gum or resin of Frankincense or Olibanum tree. Apart from being used as a cosmetic and as a fragrance, it has numerous other benefits including being an antiseptic and disinfectant. It is also a cicatrisant, helping reduce scars and easing tight skin.

• Myrrh Essential Oil- The essential oil of Myrrh is extracted from the resin of Myrrh. Myrrh, in scientific nomenclature system, is called Commiphora Myrrha and is a native to Egypt. While the resin was in use in incenses and perfumes in ancient Egypt, the oil obtained from it was used for healings wounds in ancient Greece. Myrrh is an antimicrobial and astringent oil. It also helps promote circulation and soothes skin diseases such as eczema, ringworm, itches etc.

• Cedarwood Essential Oil– Excellent for both hair and skin care. It balances oily skin, soothes and helps to heal skin rashes, reduces oil in hair and skin. Famed cedars of Biblical times (Lebanon cedar) provided one of the world’s earliest perfumes. Other ancient cultures used cedarwood for sarcophagi and palace and temple building material.

• Pine Essential Oil– A power skin and scalp renewal oil, it helps with eczema, psoriasis and pimples. It's scent is invigorating, cleansing and relaxing all at once.

• Ho Wood Essential Oil- A bright, warm, slightly woody scented oil with a few floral notes, it is an antibacterial, sedating oil. Used to relax the scalp and promote a hygienic scalp environment.

A Last Breath of Summer

The last breath of summer by Iness Rychlik
Last night as I was packing I got a Convo asking if it was still possible to get an 8 ounce tub of Summer Salve.  I put off answering it.  Not because I didn't know the answer, I'd run out of Summer at least a week prior, but because I loathe telling my customers bad news.  It was a hard decision to only offer Summer Salve half the year and Winter Salve the other half, but there was no way I could keep up with both.

Running three types of salve all the time was just too time consuming and took away too much from my already, I felt, woefully understocked store.

I resigned myself to giving my customer the bad news after I'd packed orders and printed shipping labels for the night.  Then I'd catch up on convos and break it to her.

When I make batches of salve, it's by the gallon, and I often do more than one gallon at a time.  I'd run out of Winter upstairs, so I went to my store refrigerator (two years ago I picked it up as we were starting to run out of room for food) to get a new bucket.  Pulled it out and stared at the label on top for a moment- Panacea's Summer Salve.

What?

I opened the lid and took a deep breath, catching the lighter, warmer smell that only Summer Salve has.  Sure enough, I'd utterly forgotten about an entire tub of it.  I returned upstairs, eager to tell my customer that, but some strange turn of events, I had her Summer Salve for her after all.

And so, my dear customers, I offer you a last breath of Summer.  Get it now, as this is truly the last of it until Beltane!

So whatever happend to Tsavo the blind kitten?

Those of you that were customers back in 2009 might remember this furry face.

We were so excited to get our Bengal kittens, Tsavo and Zerah, in early November of 2009. Sadly, though, we realized that something was wrong with Tsavo. While he'd chase a toy on the ground if you picked it up he'd treat it as though he was invisible- quickly we realized that he couldn't see, and had been tracking the toy by sound alone.

After waiting two months to see a specialist, Tsavo was diagnosed with birth-defect cataracts in both eyes. He has almost no vision in his left eye and only about 25% in his right eye. The good news is that he had a fantastic chance at gaining his vision back with surgery- a 96% success rate which should give him about 90% of his vision back.

The bad news, of course, was that the surgery was astronomically expensive... it was the same surgery as would be performed on a human being, to open up the eyes, removed the clouded lenses, insert new lenses and close him up... to say nothing of the staggering amount of after care that encopasses weeks of drops and pills that require their own spreadsheet for tracking and scheduling doses.

Without any other way to pay for the surgery, I turned to Etsy and the outpouring of support was unexpected, in both the degree of caring and the sheer magnitude of compassion for one little blind kitten.  We listed items whose entire purchase price went towards surgery (though to be honest the purchase price of EVERY item went towards it), and offered special Tsavo Pins, little tiger's eye hair pins that people would get for a donation and could wear on the day of surgery to help send good thoughts and prayers his way.

Thankfully Tsavo wasn't alone in all this, hewasn't alone, he had his sister, Zerah, with him to be his eyes.

The vet wouldn't do surgery until Tsavo was nine months old so his eyes would be mostly done growing, trying to hit that balance between fixing his eyes young and the greatest chances of long-term success.  In these pictures you can see how the cataracts making his eyes clouded and reflect light strangely.  In those months Tsavo grew:

And grew:

And grew some more until we had a whopping 16 pound baby cat going to the doctor for surgery:

The donations and support from Etsy were enough to cover about half of the several thousand dollar surgery, and we saved and cut back anywhere we could found the rest.  Finally on a chilly day in May it was time to go for it. We booked a hotel in the same city as the specialist and Tsavo lived it up:

The next morning we loaded Tsavo up into his carrier and took him to the clinic. We were asked to sign off on him, initialing that yes, we authorized the surgery, yes we knew it was cataract surgery, and yes we wanted the replacement lenses.

There was the option of just taking out the clouded lenses, but his ability to focus would be poor, and we decided if we were going to put him through this we were going to do it right, dammit. New lenses it was.  Leaving him there was terribly, terribly hard, but thankfully he was the first surgery of the day, so we had word by early afternoon that he had made it through the surgery and we could come pick him up in a few hours.

Later we got a second call, this one from the doctor himself to say that he thought the surgery had gone well. There had been a small fear that something could be wrong with his corneas, something we were unable to know until they opened his eyes up- but there was no issue at all!

Sitting in the waiting room with DH and the owners of three small, obnoxious dogs (all of which were named after food: Ginger, Taffy and Cocoa) we were FINALLY allowed to go into a room and see our baby.

They had him in his carrier and the vet tech took him out and I nearly burst into tears. He looked TERRIBLE. I knew he'd look rough, but I didn't know that they'd shaved parts of his face, and that coupled with his blearly expression, and the gunk all over his face... gah...

(this pic is actually after we got back to the hotel, but the look is much the same).

The surgery has been a resounding success- it's rare to have optical problems in cats, dogs are much, much more common, and the doc and the tech praised Tsavo, what a great cat he was, how most cats are just terrible to deal with, but how Tsavo was his sweet self all the way through. And they talked about how gorgeous he is.

There were zero issues with the surgery and the doc was amazed how great Tsavo looked (this is obviously a relative evaluation, there's great-looking-terrible and not-so-great-looking-terrible, apparently).

FINALLY, it was time to go home! Although he was no longer on pain meds, he slept pretty much the entire ride. He was great in the car both ways, barely made a peep and just slept.

The road to recovery was long.  Weeks and weeks of drops and pills, checkups and evaluations.  Needless to say, Tsavo is not a huge fan of having his eyes messed with.

In the end, though, it was all worth it.  Just a day after surgery Tsavo was, for the first time, able to look in the garden and see the birds that he'd been hearing for months:

So, how is he now, a year and a half later?  Fantastic.  His vision isn't perfect, he's a bit farsighted, but that's normal for this type of surgery.  The quality of life he has now is so above and beyond what he had before that I can't even imagine him as blind anymore.  He's grown (and then grown some more) into a healthy, sweet cat who can fully enjoy the world.

And here is is admiring a bumblebee in the garden:

For those of you that donated and sent good thoughts, thank you.  There are no words that can express the gratitude we have for those that reached out to help a cat they had never met.  You changed Tsavo's world for the better, and I know if he could thank you himself, he would.

Reminder!
Don't forget that anyone that's signed up to follow our blog by the 4th of this month, Friday, will be sent a 10% discount code for their next order!  See the previous entry for directions on how to sign up!
