The basis for the recipe commonly called Four Thieves is believed to have originated from thieves during the 15th century. According to popular theory, the concoction was created by a group of four thieves and grave robbers to protect themselves from contracting the plague while robbing the bodies of the gravely ill and deceased. When apprehended, the thieves admitted to using the formula and disclosed the recipe in order to receive a less severe punishment for their crimes.

What they did not disclose, though, was either the full recipe or where they learned it. This version, called Woodland Thieves, pays homage to the Queen of the Forest Bandits who taught the robbers both their trade and the blend. It adds bay, frankincense, and ravensara to the traditional blend of oils, adding a deeper, more natural scent and contributing additional antibacterial properties.

Woodland Thieves Custom Oil Blend: A middle-weight oil, perfect for scalp or length. It is a warming blend, perfect for headaches and muscle aches. It's also a purifying blend, so treating the length of your hair will surround you with a beautiful scent while purifying the air around you. Fantastic when everyone around you is sick, but you're not (yet.)

Base Oil: Fractionated Coconut Oil
Secondary Oils: Borage Oil, Rosehip Oil, Kukui Oil
Essential Oils: Clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, bay, frankincense, ravensara

Aroma: Warm, spiced herbs.

Application: Tub 1-2 drops of oil in the hands and massage into damp hair or into the scalp.

Detailed Ingredients:

• Coconut oil fractionated- Coconut oil is excellent as a skin moisturizer and softener. A study shows that extra virgin coconut oil is effective and safe when used as a moisturizer, with absence of adverse reactions. A study found that coconut oil helped prevent protein loss from the wet combing of hair when used for fourteen hours as a conditioner before washing the hair.

• Borage Oil- Borage is also sometimes known as starflower, and grows wildly in many parts of the world. The use of borage in various medications dates back at least to Roman times, during which several writers described the mysterious healing properties of borage leaves (steeped in wine, which may also have contributed to said ‘healing properties’.) Borage oil is extracted from the seeds of the borage plant, and its essential ingredient has been found to be gamma linolenic acid, commonly known as GLA, which is an essential fatty acids. One experiment found that skin creams which contained borage oil were markedly more effective in replenishing dry, damaged skin than those creams which contained no borage. These results have been taken as evidence that borage oil proves a replenishing effect on the skin and hair, and is able to restore moisture and elasticity where it had previously been lost.

• Rose hip Oil- is extracted from the seeds contained in the intensely red berry-like fruits -or hips- of a wild rose-bush that grows in the cool, lush mountain rainy valleys of the southern Andes, in Chile. It is a superb hydrator with a high absorbing level, penetrating dry skin and hair almost instantly to restore a much needed moisture balance frequently lost by climatic and environmental conditions such as dryness and air toxicity.

• Kukui Oil- The people of Hawaii would anoint their infants with Kukui Nut Oil, protecting them from the ravages of the salt, the sun, the wind, and other elements. Not coincidentally the word "Kukui" means "Enlightenment" in Hawaiian. This oil is quick-absorbing, luxuriant and versatile for both skin and hair.

• Frankincense Essential Oil- Frankincense Oil is extracted from gum or resin of Frankincense or Olibanum tree. Apart from being used as a cosmetic and as a fragrance, it has numerous other benefits including being an antiseptic and disinfectant. It is also a cicatrisant, helping reduce scars and easing tight skin.

• Bay Essential Oil– Bay is a scalp stimulant and antiseptic astringent and was very popular with the Romans, who thought Bay was a symbol of wisdom, peace and protection. The Latin Laudis means “to praise,” which is why the victors at the Olympic games were presented with a Laurel (Bay) Wreath. The priestesses at Delphi sat over the burning fumes to increase their prophetic visions.

• Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil- An anti-inflamatory that aids in the circulation of blood. Helps remove impurities from the hair and scalp and promotes growth. Good for treating scalp infections because of its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties.

• Clove Essential Oil- This warm and spicy oil aids in circulation and is recommended for skin care, especially to acne patients.

• Eucalyptus Essential Oil- One of the oldest native medicines used in Australia. It is known now for its use in inhalants and vapor rubs, but is also soothing to an irritated scalp.

• Lemon Essential Oil- This refreshing oil is an antifungal and antibacterial. It also promotes circulation of the scalp.

• Ravensara Essential Oil- A slightly spicy, camphory, woody herbaceous essential oil with an awakening aroma. Ravensara is fantastic for healing bacterial scalp infections and helps clear skin blemishes.

• Rosemary Essential Oil– An antimicrobial/antiseptic scalp stimulant and soother; to the ancient Greeks and Romans the plant was sacred, symbolic of loyalty, death, and remembrance, as well as scholarly learning. At weddings and important occasions, wherever solemn vows were made, garlands and headdresses of rosemary were worn, as an emblem of trust and constancy.

They are also an excellent source of vitamins A, B6 and C. In addition, the seeds contain beneficial nutrients like zinc, magnesium, calcium and iron. • Avocado Oil- This deep golden oil is an edible oil pressed from the fruit of the Persea americana (avocado). It is used for lubrication and in cosmetics where it is valued for its regenerative and moisturizing properties. Rich in nutrients, amino acids, and essential fatty acids, this nutritional oil is excellent for enhancing hair health. It supplies vitamins A, B, D, and E to nourish both hair follicles and the scalp. Vitamin E also acts as a protective antioxidant. It has natural humectant properties, adding and locking in moisture. Filling Machine Video and bonus Selkie production picture

Tonight was a serious production day (night?) for me.  I started at about 2pm and finally sat down at about 1am.  But I got many lovely and awesome things made for you :)

Selkie Herbal Hair Detangler

First off is a fresh batch of Selkie!  Here's me squeezing a jelly bag full of the slippery elm, fenugreek, and marshmallow root.  It takes a very long time (and two hands, here I was using one for the camera) to squeeze all of the slippery goodness out of there after it's simmered.

Don't forget you can pick up Selkie in a 1 oz Sample Size, an8 oz Full Size, and an 8 oz Refill Pouch.

Filling Machine Experimentation

The filling machine got a workout tonight: Triple Moon Oil, Selkie Herbal Detangler, and all three types of hair salve!

I hadn't had a chance yet to try the filling machine with any of the salves, and had no idea how it was going to go.  Much to my surprise, it went great!

I do miss the pretty star shape the old method left, though, so I've already got a plan in the works to try to restore that.

Curious as to how much time I was really saving, I took two short videos of me filling samples of Triple Moon Oil.

I hadn't ever timed myself using it before, but the time it took using the old funnel method (44 seconds) to the new filling machine method (14 seconds), reduced my filling time per bottle from 15 seconds to 5.  Overall, that cuts my bottling time down by two thirds. Considering how many things come in bottles, that's HUGE!

What are customers saying about Selkie?

Lots and lots of awesome things!

Longhairs are finding that they get the most use out of the larger bottles, and it both gets out tangles and lets them wear their hair down more.

Others love the scent and the natural ingredients

And it's a hit with both kids and parents alike!

Don't forget you can pick up Selkie in a 1 oz Sample Size, an 8 oz Full Size, and an 8 oz Refill Pouch

Philosopher's Beard Oil

The idea of the philosopher's beard gained traction when in 155 BCE three philosophers arrived in Rome as Greek diplomats: Carneades, head of the Platonic Academy; Critolaus of Aristotle's Lyceum; and the head of the Stoics Diogenes of Babylon. "In contrast to their beautifully clean-shaven Italian audience, these three intellectuals all sported magnificent beards." Thus the connection of beards and philosophy caught hold of the Roman public imagination.

As historian John Sellars puts it, Epictetus "affirmed the philosopher's beard as something almost sacred...to express the idea that philosophy is no mere intellectual hobby but rather a way of life that, by definition, transforms every aspect of one's behavior, including one's shaving habits. If someone continues to shave in order to look the part of a respectable Roman citizen, it is clear that they have not yet embraced philosophy conceived as a way of life and have not yet escaped the social customs of the majority...the true philosopher will only act according to reason or according to nature, rejecting the arbitrary conventions that guide the behavior of everyone else."

Philosopher's Beard Oil Oil Custom Blend: A light, moisturizing oil perfect for both the beard and the skin beneath.

Base Oil: Sweet Almond Oil
Secondary Oils: Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil
Essential Oils: Bay Laurel, Litsea, Clove, Bergamot, Sweet Orange

Aroma: Warm rum and clean citrus.

Application: After a shower rub 1-2 drops of oil in the hands and massage into the beard.

Detailed Ingredients:

• Sweet Almond Oil- This pale golden oil is extracted from almond kernels. Apart from vitamin E it also contains vitamin D and other nutritious components including essential minerals such as magnesium, calcium and rich, natural fats. This oil is easily absorbed and will not clog pores, making it ideal for the scalp and face as well as hair.

• Jojoba Oil- Jojoba Oil is found to be an ideal moisturizer and conditioner which is derived from a natural plant. Jojoba oil is produced from a desert plant called Simmondsia Chinensis whose oil is highly regarded as an effective conditioner, moisturizer, cleanser and softener for the skin and hair. This deep golden oil is considered to be the closest to the sebum naturally produced by the body, making it a customer favorite.

• Argan oil, dubbed as Miracle oil; extracted from kernels of Argan fruit by crushing, is swiftly taking the place of other natural oils for hair protection and treatment. Argan oil contains tocopherols (vitamin E), phenols, carotenes, squalene, and fatty acids, making it both light and great for brittle hair.

• Litsea Cubeba Essential Oil- A heavy, sweet citrus oil. The essential oil is extracted from the ripened and dried fruits of the Litsea Cubeba tree. Like most citrus oils, its scent is immediately uplifting and rejuvenating, its astringent prperties help to cleans scalp pores, while its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action minimizes and heals existing flare-ups.

• Clove Essential Oil- This warm and spicy oil aids in circulation and is recommended for skin care, especially to acne patients.

• Bergamot Essential Oil- Certain components of the essential oil of Bergamot are antibiotic and disinfectant in nature. They inhibit the growth of germs, virus and fungi. They also effectively prohibit infections, including those of the skin. It has a refreshing and natural scent and is also a tonic, meaning it tones up skin and muscles

• Orange (Sweet) Essential Oil- A zesty citrus, sweet, strong aroma, Sweet Orange is cheering, refreshing, uplifting, and comforting. Orange, like all citrus fruits, plays an important role in Chinese medicine.

There's three sizes:

The bottles are made of amber glass, making it durable as well as blocking UV rays that would harm the herbal infusion, oils, and essential oils within.

1 oz Sample Bottle

For purchase here, this is a perfect sample for trying out Selkie.  It's also a handy little bottle to tuck in your purse, gym bag, travel suitcase, or diaper bag!  Refill it over and over with our awesome soft refill pouch.

8 oz Full-Sized Bottle

8 oz Soft Refill Pouch

For purchase here, this is a great way to make the most out of your amber glass Selkie bottles.  It also weighs nearly half of what the 8 oz glass bottle does, so you save on shipping costs too.  Have your own mister bottle?  Awesome, you can load it right up with this refill.  If you want a Selkie label for your own bottle, just leave a note in the Message to Seller in checkout and we'll include one for free!

Directions

Yes, that's actually my hair in the sun after a good session with Selkie!  You'll love the softness, shine, and of course, lack of tangles!  Also, I discovered how hard is is to take a picture of your own hair while kneeling in a bunch of flowers.

Shake well. Mist Selkie onto either damp or dry hair. Gently detangle first with the fingers, then with a wide-toothed comb, starting at the ends of the hair.

Ingredients

Every ingredient in Selkie is vegan, hand-blended, and certified organic. So what’s in it?

Distilled water, Marshmallow root, slippery elm & fenugreek seed herbal infusion, Aloe vera gel, Apple cider vinegar, Argan Oil, Borage Oil, Camelina Oil, Vitamin E Oil, and the essential oils of Catnip, Cedarwood, Lavender, Lime, Petitgrain, and Sage

  • Distilled water– Ensures that Selkie has no mineral buildup and allows for a pH neutral start.
  • Marshmallow root, slippery elm & fenugreek seed herbal infusion– These three ingredients give Selkie its slip by virtue of their mucilaginous compounds. They also naturally soften hair, provide natural plant protein, add shine, and sooth an itchy or dry scalp.
  • Aloe vera gel– While well-known for its benefits to skin, this third mucilaginous ingredient provides deep moisturizing effects to the hair and scalp as well. In addition it helps restore pH levels and has both emollient and moisturizing properties, meaning that it smooths the cuticle and attracts and seals in moisture.
  • Apple cider vinegar– The mildly acidic nature of this helps balance pH of hair and also helps to remove buildup. ACV encourages the cuticle of the hair to lay closed, making hair shine and tangle less.
  • Argan Oil– Sometimes called “Miracle Oil,” argan oil is extracted from kernels of Argan fruit by crushing. It is swiftly taking the place of other natural oils for hair protection and treatment. Argan oil contains tocopherols (vitamin E), phenols, carotenes, squalene, and fatty acids, making it both light and great for brittle hair.
  • Borage Oil– Sometimes known as starflower, borage grows wildly in many parts of the world. Borage oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant, and its essential ingredient has been found to be gamma linolenic acid, commonly known as GLA, which is an essential fatty acid that provides a replenishing effect on the skin and hair, and is able to restore moisture and elasticity where it had previously been lost.
  • Camelina Oil– Known as the “gold of pleasure” to Europeans not long ago. Rich in natural antioxidants, Omega-3 fatty acids, tocopherols, and high in vitamin E content, Camelina oil is truly under appreciated.
  • Vitamin E Oil– Our natural Vitamin E oil is obtained by vacuum distillation of vegetable fats derived from non-GMO soy sources. It prevents rancidity and it acts as an anti-oxidant. This particular Vitamin E oil has been verified and tested GMO-free from crop to finished material.
  • Catnip Essential Oil– A stimulant, catnip can increase blood flow to the scalp, encouraging growth. It’s astringent properties help tighten muscles and skin, helping to reduce shedding in some cases. Catnip is also reputed to assist in reducing split ends.
  • Cedarwood Essential Oil– Excellent for both hair and skin care. It balances oily skin, soothes and helps to heal skin rashes, and reduces oil in hair and skin.
  • Lavender Essential Oil– Enhances hair growth by stimulating the scalp. The name “lavender” is derived from the Latin lavare, meaning, “to wash” and was known as one of the seven polyvalents (effective against many toxins).
  • Lime Essential Oil– A bright scent, lime is antiviral, astringent, and bactericidal. It is at once a cleansing and moisturizing oil, helping with dandruff and scalp buildup.
  • Petitgrain Essential Oil– Made from the leaves and twigs of this amazing tree, it is antiseptic, antispasmodic, a natural deodorant, and nervine. Use in a hair oil will leave hair and scalp fragrant (petitgrain has woody, citrus and floral notes all in one!), while soothing and preventing bacterial and fungal growth.
  • Sage Essential Oil– A scalp soother and astringent, the herb is of ancient repute, valued as a culinary and medicinal plant – called herba sacra, ‘sacred herb’, by the Romans.

Ethics

The only animal Selkie was ever tested on was me.

Enjoy Selkie, and I can't wait to hear what you think about it!
